Choosing a theme for a party can be quite difficult. After all, it takes considerable planning and creative flair to come up with a concept that matches the kind of event you want to put on and the people who will be attending. This is even more difficult for costume parties since you need to factor in what your guests will feel comfortable wearing.
Dony Ngamino from
Blossom Costumes says that, despite the timeless allure of dressing up, costume trends, much like fashion, have cycles.
"We've noticed a real trend for 1920's and flappers themes over the last few years whereas, prior to that, people were all about horror and movie themes," he says. "It's always changing."
Whether you're putting on a birthday party, anniversary, engagement, or any other kind of special event this summer, choosing the perfect theme will go a long way towards making your event a memorable success.

Ancient Greek and Roman
The toga party has been staple of the party theme circuit for a long time – and perfect for this hot spell most of us across Australia have been experiencing over the past couple of weeks. The Greek and Roman theme is great since it accommodates everyone. Whether you're just going to wrap yourself in a bed sheet or you want to wear full centurion armour, you're sure to find something to channel your inner gladiator or Cleopatra. Plus, it's also a great excuse for you and your guests to eat, drink and be merry. After all, "when in Rome, do as the Romans do!"

The roaring 20's
The 1920's were a wild time for parties, glamour jazz, and what was considered to be scandalous behaviour at the time! With sequined flapper dresses and dashing suits, your guests are sure to look impressive. Add a few lavish accessories such as a diamond tiara, feathered fan and long pearl necklaces, and you are guaranteed to look like a silent movie star!

Retro 60's and 70's
This is a fabulous theme for people who love music and dressing up in colourful (and some might even say garish!) costumes. Your guests can dress up as fans or musicians from one of the greatest musical eras in history and rock out all night long dressed in outfits with bold, psychedelic prints. Think ABBA, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Queen, David Bowie, Studio 54 and the Sex Pistols. You could even go as an icon from the 60’s and 70’s such as Twiggy, Jimi Hendrix, Austin Powers or John Travolta in A Saturday Night Fever.

Zombie apocalypse
Between TV shows like The Walking Dead, iZombie and Z Nation, it's not hard to see our long-held obsession with zombies shows no signs of abating. So, if you're hungry for brains, then this might be the theme for your next event. Shambling across the dance floor, dragging your limbs around and devouring the living are all great ways to spend an evening for any undead monster. This costume theme appeal to a younger crowd, and all fans of horror or Michael Jackson's Thriller.
